WHY DOES THE CENTER OF MY CHEST HURT WHEN I PRESS IT?

When Chest Pain Is Not Coming from the Heart: Understanding the Hidden Causes of Chest, Stomach, and Leg Pain

Hello, my dear friends. This is Dr. Charles from PHI Preventive Health Institute, where we share practical health lessons drawn from real-life cases we see every day.

Many people become frightened when they experience chest pain.

Their first thought is often:

"Is it my heart?"

While chest pain should always be taken seriously, not all chest pain is caused by heart disease.

Sometimes the body is telling a different story.

Today, I want to share the health lessons from a young woman who experienced chest pain, stomach discomfort, leg pain, and occasional shortness of breath.

A Young Woman with Many Symptoms

A 22-year-old woman came to the clinic because she had been experiencing:

  • Chest pain

  • Stomach pain

  • Leg pain

  • Occasional shortness of breath

  • Nausea

  • Heart palpitations

  • General discomfort

Naturally, she was worried.

Many people would be.

Because chest pain can be frightening.

Is Every Chest Pain a Heart Problem?

One of the first concerns was whether her heart was causing the pain.

Fortunately, tests showed that her heart was healthy.

Her ECG was normal.

Her heart scan was normal.

Her chest X-ray was normal.

This was good news.

But if the heart was not the cause, what was causing the pain?

The Real Cause of the Chest Pain

During her examination, doctors discovered that pressing on the center of her chest reproduced the pain.

This pointed to a condition called costochondritis.

Costochondritis occurs when the tissues connecting the ribs to the breastbone become irritated or inflamed.

It can cause:

  • Pain in the center of the chest

  • Tenderness when touched

  • Discomfort when moving

  • Pain that may come and go

Although it can feel alarming, it is usually not dangerous.

Why Was Her Stomach Hurting?

The patient also complained of pain in the upper part of her abdomen and frequent nausea.

Further investigations suggested irritation of the stomach lining, commonly known as gastritis.

Several things can contribute to gastritis, including:

  • Certain pain medications

  • Stress

  • Irregular eating habits

  • Stomach infections

Common symptoms include:

  • Burning stomach pain

  • Nausea

  • Indigestion

  • Bloating

  • Loss of appetite

Another Hidden Problem: Iron Deficiency

Blood tests revealed that she had mild iron deficiency anemia.

Anemia occurs when the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen efficiently.

People with anemia may experience:

  • Fatigue

  • Weakness

  • Shortness of breath

  • Dizziness

  • Poor concentration

In young women, heavy menstrual bleeding is a common cause of iron deficiency.

What About the Leg Pain?

The patient had also been experiencing recurring leg pain.

Fortunately, tests ruled out dangerous blood clots.

Her symptoms appeared to be related to irritation of the nerves, which can sometimes cause burning, tingling, or aching pain.

This explains why medication that helps calm nerve pain provided some relief.

The Role of Stress and Anxiety

Sometimes physical symptoms and emotional stress can affect one another.

Worry, anxiety, poor sleep, and prolonged stress can contribute to:

  • Chest discomfort

  • Palpitations

  • Shortness of breath

  • Muscle tension

  • Digestive problems

This does not mean the symptoms are "imaginary."

The symptoms are real.

It simply means that emotional health and physical health are closely connected.

What Can We Learn from This Case?

This case teaches us an important lesson.

Not every chest pain is a heart attack.

Not every stomach pain is a serious disease.

Not every leg pain is a blood clot.

However, persistent symptoms should never be ignored.

Proper medical evaluation helps identify the true cause and ensures that serious conditions are not missed.

When Should You Seek Medical Attention?

Seek medical care if you experience:

  • Persistent chest pain

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Severe stomach pain

  • Frequent palpitations

  • Unexplained fatigue

  • Persistent leg pain or swelling

  • Symptoms that interfere with daily life

Early evaluation can provide answers and prevent complications.

Final Thoughts

Our bodies often send warning signs long before major health problems develop.

Chest pain, stomach discomfort, shortness of breath, fatigue, and leg pain should not simply be ignored.

The good news is that many causes of these symptoms can be successfully managed when identified early.

Listen to your body.

Pay attention to persistent symptoms.

Seek medical advice when needed.

And remember, good health begins with understanding what your body is trying to tell you.
